2017 is certainly a year of transformation for Time For Art! For most of us, a new year means setting goals, making changes, getting our priorities in order, and thinking about how to make this year even better than the one before. The same holds true in the business arena. As owner of this wonderful business, I am constantly looking for ways to celebrate life through artistic expression, offer creative services for my clients, and staying true to my passion - which is art! In order to bring you my very best, I've taken a step back so I can take leaps and bounds forward. To start, I'm currently looking for a studio that better meets the needs of both the business and our loyal clients. Although we're no longer located in the Kildaire Farms Rd. space, we're actively looking for the perfect place for you to create and celebrate. Along those lines, I'm focusing on the services that can be done from YOUR place - face painting, private paint parties, mobile paint events, and corporate, church or community functions. There are still plenty of ways to give your child, tween/teen or social group an artistic celebration they'll never forget! Just contact me to schedule your next event.

To all of the families, children, friends, and businesses who have shown your support over the years - THANK YOU! You're the reason why I do what I do! I believe the best of Time For Art is yet to come! So stay tuned, and be sure to follow us on Facebook for the latest updates!

Artistically yours,
Sharon Davis

Staying Motivated and Inspired!

Wow! The summer has come and we are already into September.   I am so grateful for so many wonderful kids that come through my door, as well as the parents who continue to bring them back and share that their little one couldn’t even sleep well because they were so excited about coming to Time For Art!  These stories remind me that, despite the challenges that come with being a new business owner, this is not by accident and it is not in vain.

Near the end of August, I began painting these Little Cutie characters that inspired me in hopes of passing that inspiration along to the students that come through my studio.  It is a work in progress, and I questioned if these paintings were something people would respond to or if painting them was just self-fulfillment for me.  Well, after participating in my very first major festival, I’ve come to realize it’s a bit of both. I had so many parents love the pictures and tell me the paintings reminded them of their own little ones.  So many people were ready to buy them!  This encouraged me to come back to the studio and complete what I started.  In the process of trying to figure out the formula to being a successful business owner, I look to my students and my experiences to keep me motivated and inspired. It works every time! So I invite you to check out our website to enjoy these Little Cuties …. and maybe even purchase one for your own little cutie!

How I love spring as the colors of the skies and trees transition from gray to beautiful blues, pastel pinks, lavenders, and greens.  Although we may have to fight through the pollen for  a moment, it still ignites excitement of the beauty that spring brings and the summer to follow.   Spring is a time for many artists to de-clutter our minds and try new ideas and techniques to inspire.   I know for me, I run through so many ideas that are influenced by themed holidays and events such as Christmas,  Frosty the snowman, Valentine's, St. Patrick's, and Mother’s Day, just to name a few.  Although these ideas are great and creative, Spring opens doors to truly be inspired by so many other things as well.  For one, the arts in nature.  A walk in the park or in your own backyard can inspire you and young minds.  Motivate your artist to simply draw that flower, that leaf, the dragon fly, humming bird, or the beautiful blue sky!  It is a great way to connect and create.  Let's not forget you have the best sculpting medium in your yard…dirt!   Spring always gets me excited to head to the museum and discover the inspiration behind so many great works of art. Don’t forget to support your local college museum!  This is where you will find fresh and pure ideas in the arts.   So be inspired and bond with your young artist and enjoy what spring can bring creatively.

I'm in the right garden; I'm just trying to pick the right vegetable!

Artists wear many hats and also travel many paths to discover the true calling.  For those of you that may not know, I am an art educator of 11+ years, a makeup artist of 10+ years, a certified esthetician, along with being the owner of Time For Art, LLC.   Yes, I am an artist.  A few weeks ago I ran into a fellow creative friend and she was tickled to see me promoting Time For Art, for she only knew me as Sharon Davis of S. Davis Makeup Artistry.  She had no idea that I was an elementary art teacher first, and makeup artistry came later.  As we caught up and shared stories and what we wanted to see happen in the New Year, she says to me, “Girl, you are just like me; you don’t know what you want to do.”  We both laughed as it was truly kind hearted.  However, if that statement was made years ago I would have been in a frenzy, at a level of frustration and self-doubt.

What I have learned being a free spirit and artistic, is that we are on a path to discovery and learning new things.  This learning can be daily; it may come in months and for most, years.  I often look at my journey in seasons.  I spent a long time feeling like I was supposed to specialize in one thing and one thing only.  I used to tell myself, “I’m in the right garden, but I’m trying to pick the right vegetable.”  My garden is the world of art, the vegetable I was so unsure of, represented education, makeup, esthetics, pursuit of a master’s degree, and fashion design.  Oh, I was so confused!  I was taught that you find a niche and you do that until you retire.  My parents are retired educators, so for me, I was supposed to be a teacher in the education system.  Although I was great at teaching, I was not satisfied with that vegetable; I just knew it was something else.  I spent a while trying to find that one perfect vegetable.  Then I thought of my daddy and his garden.  My daddy actually had three gardens.  One was filled with string beans, collards, squash, and tomatoes.  The other gardens were filled with corn, cabbages, watermelon, melons, and there was a grape vine out there as well.   My dad tended to each of them equally and the approach was quite different.  However, he was always so satisfied to watch his vegetables grow.  He was patient and celebrated the successful stock and went back to the drawing board to assess why some of the other produce didn’t grow.  So I began to ask myself, “Why I am I just looking for the one right vegetable?”  I can enjoy the variety of all the other vegetables within this garden.  So I stopped my panic and began to embrace the journey and the opportunities that this wonderful world of art allots me.

In my garden, I have been “teacher of the year” and now I’m providing education to youth and adults in a space I absolutely love.  Is it hard work?  YES, just like watching my daddy with his garden.  In my garden I have nurtured this Beauty Veggie.  I steadily built a clientele of beautiful brides and models.  Nurturing this experience has brought me opportunities to sell and educate on some of the most famous beauty brands in the world, as well as meet these beauty innovators.  It doesn’t end there, as my Beauty Vegetable has allowed me to work with beautiful musical legends, such as Nnenna Freelon, Shirley Caesar, Yolanda Rabun, and I had a chance to work with reality personality, Trina Braxton.  I am still sowing into My Garden of Art, am still producing and I look forward to the experience whether a success or a challenge.  I say all this to you to encourage my creative spirits to stay the course.  It is okay to try different things in this world we call art.  It is a journey, nurture your produce, be patient, enjoy and yield the benefits of your labor.  People may not understand, but they will love what you produce to share.  So don’t just look for that one vegetable in your garden, pick several and enjoy the beauty of each!

So much to be Thankful and Grateful for!

December is near and it will be almost a year of ownership of Time For Art, LLC. Around this time many of us reflect on things that we are grateful and thankful for. I am truly thankful for this opportunity to provide a place and experience for young and novice artists to be creative. I am so thankful for all the role models that I have had along the way in this journey of art and art education. However, I must highlight one particular amazing woman, affectionately known as Ms. Olivia.

Ms. Olivia was a friend of my mother and an amazing seamstress and crafter. During my elementary school years, my mother decided that my twin sister and I needed something a little more constructive to do with our weekends. So she would take us over to Ms. Olivia during the November season. This was the time when Ms. Olivia was making elaborate decorations for her Christmas tree and for loved ones for the holidays. I remember entering her cozy home warmed by the brick fireplace. It was so nice to enter into the front door, step down into a nook, and look to the left to see this immaculate tree filled with the most gorgeous ornaments I’ve ever seen. Ms. Olivia taught us how to make some of the most creative ornaments such as the drummer boy, felt stocking stuffers, strawberry ornaments made out of walnuts, and the Hershey kiss holder. We learned so many knitting and hand sewing techniques. This truly elevated my love for the arts and sewing. I remember the excitement of getting up and going to Ms. Olivia’s. Excited to see what we would be making and what Little Debbie snack cake we would get that day (Oh the little things that meant so much). Then at the last class of those sessions, she would allow us to select a special ornament off her tree! And she would stuff a little money in the ornament as a Christmas gift to us. I still to this day have those ornaments at my parents' home and yes, they still go up on the tree each year. I will always remember and love Ms. Olivia for that. So I strive to instill this love and passion for arts and crafts in the kids at Time For Art, and I hope remember and cherish their experiences in the studio the way I did with Ms. Olivia.

I encourage you all to continue to seek out the Ms. Olivia experiences for your young artist, to continue to inspire them creatively. Your children will thank you for years to come.
